Design Notes
The Albatross is our newest titanium model, light, lively, and built around the incredible new 32" wheel standard. It draws upon and elevates all we have learned in developing big wheeled bikes over the past two decades - using these massive wheels and tyres to create a bike which carries speed and handles like no other for taller riders. You can find some more in depth thoughts on 32" wheels in this blog post, but there are a few critical notes below.
These are sold as a 'rolling chassis' including:
- Albatross frame in 3Al 2.5V seamless Titanium - butted main tubes
- 32 inch specific full carbon Columbus Futura Adventure fork
- Hope ZS44/EC44 headset
- Hope hubs laced to Willow Al rims with Sapim Race spokes
- Maxxis Aspen 32x2.4" tyres
Like an overgrown Swift or Pegasus - it's designed to be a bike which is happy to cover big miles over multiple long days out - but to retain a light and lively ride quality which still makes it fun for little local blasts. Also akin to those models, while it's designed with use of a flat bar in mind, depending on your fit needs it can also be run with a suitable off-road drop bar - especially if you use one of our Laing high rise stems.
Unlike those bikes however, it's a rigid specific design. Due to lack of commercially available suspension options for the wheelsize, as well as a desire to keep the front end height reasonable - plus understanding how smoothly these wheels roll - I have designed these frames around a rigid 470mm carbon fork from our friends at Columbus. For those interested in a suspension corrected design, we can accommodate that as part of our custom programme.
As with all Singular frames, we aim to use common fitment standards. One slight divergence from that with these frames is use of 'superboost' 157mm rear hub spacing. It's my feeling that one potential downside to these big hoops is a lack of lateral wheel stiffness due to reduced spoke triangulation. This can be mitigated by using a hub standard with wider flange spacing - along with building wheels with 32 spokes of 14/15 gauge with brass nipples.
Note on component variance between markets. Due to different component availability across borders, all orders filled from our UK base (i.e. all of UK and Europe) will have Hope Technology hubs and headset, while those from the Portland, OR workshop (USA and most of rest of world) will have wheels from our friends at Astral and headset from White Industries. For all customers there will be a choice of colours from their respective ranges.

"Something close to a magic carpet ride, and if you're put off by cookie cutter, carbon fibre bikes, then this might be a nice alternative.
