Design Notes

Singular was at the vanguard of the current era of big wheel, drop handlebar off-road bikes. Originally released in 2008, the Gryphon was among the first production drop-bar frames with 29" tyre clearance and disc brakes designed for off-road use.

It became a cult favourite. More people came to appreciate the comfort and versatility of drop bars with the alchemistic pairing of big fat 29″ rubber. Drawing upon and further evolving the traditions of the legendary bikes of Charlie Cunningham and more contemporaneously Matt Chester, the Gryphon foreshadowed the advent of ‘gravel’ bikes. To the best of our knowledge, the Gryphon was the first production 29″ wheeled, disc braked, steel mountain bike frameset designed for use with a drop handlebar.

The Gryphon has returned, updated with even more tyre clearance, thru axles and flat mount brakes – but retaining the fabled smooth ride and lively handling of its predecessors.

Available in M, L & XL sizes – in a lovely muted khaki (RAL 7034) with a simple Singular logo in ivory.

We utilise a size specific selection of Taiwan made custom drawn triple butted heat treated 4130 Cro-Mo tubing. That means larger frames get beefier tubes, and smaller frames still ride nice and smooth with smaller riders.

  • "The whole thing felt stable and balanced, and my confidence on it grew fast. The handling was off the charts."

    - Barry Lachapelle, Bike Gear Database

  • "Whenever I ride the Singular, it has me absolutely beaming from ear to ear, seeking out the biggest puddles I can find."

    - Luke Broster, Bikepacking.com

  • "As the duality of the eagle and lion is implied... it is lightfooted and nimble unloaded, like an eagle surfing thermals, but transforms into an apex tourer when loaded down."

    - John Watson, The Radavist
